What is More Important than Time?

This a recent email to my LinkedIn connections. It fits well here too. The more I discover the more I find I do not know. I wonder if that is a reason so many stop their discovery process. Living inside a myth is easier.

besuccessfulI have accomplished many successes over the course of my life and the most profound and rewarding happened quickly without any struggle or effort on my part. The common refrain that success comes by hard work and persistence is a large lie in my view. Good for keeping employees nose to the grindstone. Discovering what I do best and learning how to delegate the rest has been my focus. What is the source of effortlessness in this moment? My greatest successes happened while operating as an employee however.   That period is no longer available to me and for millions of others worldwide. I have reached the place where it is clear to me that what it takes to succeed now is entirely different from what it took to succeed as an employee. While many of the ‘rules’ for success may be similar and apply in all cases, principles if you will, there is much I have yet to discover.

I have determined three simple conditions are essential for my success. One is the beliefs I view the day provide what is possible for me to achieve. Limiting beliefs or worse, incongruent opposing beliefs produce failure. When I cannot set aside a belief and replace it with another, even for just a moment, I am stuck.impossibleNOT

Two is clarity comes from simplicity and enables focus. My daily ‘doing now’ list is short and replaced the long to ‘to do’ list I used to beat myself up with every evening.

The most important condition for effective action and accomplishment, for success daily is not time nor is it a set of skills I must continue to master. It is not intention, passion, bliss, or effective goal setting. All are useful but without one condition present make no difference. It is not in any of the courses I have taken over the last thirty years on leadership and dozens of other useful experiences. Concepts are always different from reality. When I have ‘this’ everything I do works. Without enough of ‘it’ I fail. This was useful as an employee but not essential to my day-to-day successes. What is it? Let me know and a future post will divulge my answer.

The FOUR Biggest Reasons for Failure

Any of these four will produce failure every time and there is nothing special about the order.

success12# 1) Believe the ‘marketing’ preached by every single program, political party or religion! My favorite one is you have to have first mover advantage, join early, get in at the beginning before the herd and buy into prelaunch tactics forever. The ‘hurry up and wait’ gets very old. Another one is failure is not your fault. That sounds nice but who really is in charge of your life then? As long as you live in hope, you will fail. Hope is NOT a strategy and is never a tactic to acquire or succeed at anything. If you cannot distinguish between marketing, truth and reality, you are doomed. Yes, the truth gives you a small chance to be free. If you say, ‘if it is too good to be true it likely isn’t’, then please leave now. You are invincibly brainwashed and sabotage your success every time. The ability and willingness to think for yourself is rare and not taught in government institutions.

# 2) You failed because the organization was actually a sifting and sorting mechanism for the few who succeed regardless of circumstances or conditions. Most people have not valued their first and second tier relationships enough to know how important they are. If your friends and family will not or cannot support you, why would strangers? You did not have the skills, the experience or support required to accomplish the objectives. YOU are not ‘qualified’ to succeed in every area or task. Again, hope is not a strategy or tactic for success. How do you become qualified is a worthwhile question. Who determines the qualifications?   It is not the government, any government by the way.

successcycle# 3)  Everyone is committed and outcomes make them clear. If yours is tentative and conditional combined with the same from the organization you will fail. Most of us have tried enough to know that ‘try’ only produces an education in failure, a learning experience. Some will do their best but once reached, they quit also. The excuse, “I did my best” placates all failures. We live in a time when contracts are worthless, no fault divorce is easy come easy go and a person’s word means even less. Consequently, you don’t trust yourself or anyone else. Until you know that you can count on yourself without anyone watching and until you have accomplished the impossible for you just past where you usually quit, you will continue to fail by habit.

#4)  You are not a leader and only want to be a follower.  A leader takes responsibility for all outcomes, is ‘cause’ in the matter of their life. If you keep following the same path to oblivion as the rest of your group, you have nobody but you to blame for the same outcomes. Results matter. Ignoring the ‘fruit’ is a sure way to fail. Hang out with people that inspire you and you become who you spend your time with. Bad fruit and good fruit hang out in separate groups.

The list is longer than just these four but these four once identified can make the success6difference. Awareness of these four areas can produce ground where success has a real chance to thrive.

Will you stay the course; commit to at least one year or even better, 18 months, to allow the ‘fruit’ to ripen?   Yes, you need to know all the costs up front but nothing you have ever done successfully happened in days, weeks or a few short months. If your memory tells you otherwise, you have forgotten the most important steps you took to get there.

Can you follow directions and complete actions without regard for how you ‘think’ it should turn out? Yes means you are coachable. Most people cannot, will not let go of the thinking and beliefs that only serve their masters interests.

Where do you want to go and how do you get there? It will not happen on your own. Find a group that supports you! Where do we want to go and how do we get there? Liberals, democrats and socialists have their own groups. They have their own conditions for satisfaction, tenets, rules and beliefs and claim profit is evil. Profit pays for everything, not the government. The total number of jobs has been declining in the USA since the 1960’s while the number of people looking for a job keeps rising. Can you guess why ‘pay’ has not increased and never will.

Everyone loves sales! What you fear is rejection! …

At the bottom no one in life can help anyone else in life; this one experiences over and over in every conflict and every perplexity: that one is alone. That isn’t as bad as it may first appear; and again it is the best thing in life that each should have everything in himself; his fate, his future, his whole expanse and world. – Rainer Maria Rilke

Week – #23 Masterkey You Get What You GIVE

Haanel says…that the law of success is service; that we get what we give, and for this reason we should consider it a great privilege to be able to give.

givetoget3This may be his most profound argument so far, we get what we give, not what we want, wish, demand, hope or believe.  Deuteronomy 16:17

This is the science which embraces all sciences. It is the art which, above all arts, is relevant to human life. In the mastery of this science and this art there is opportunity for unending progression. Perfection in this is not acquired in six days, nor in six weeks, nor in six months. It is the labor of life. Not to go forward is to go backward.

Science and art operate as practice, an ongoing development, climbing a mountain with no top. What was useful earlier may no longer be of use, workable or relevant. What thinking brought you to this moment may likely be insufficient in moving you into the next.  For most of us, the box we are inside, has instructions on the outside written in a language we are unaware or ignorant. The ‘listening’ we are able to provide must let go of our past to hear it. Understanding comes when we have done enough ‘work’.

1. The money consciousness is an attitude of mind; it is the open door to the arteries of commerce. It is the receptive attitude. Desire is the attractive force which sets the current in motion and fear is the great obstacle by which the current is stopped or completely reversed, turned away from us.

Fear does not exist. Show me some!! Neither does resignation but whatever we use to doNOTfeedFearstay stuck, while mythological as any dragon, has more power over us than we allow ourselves to recognize until we do recognize it. If we can see, the explanation of and for our internal state only justifies our inaction. It could be just as easily called excitement, exhilaration and many other emotional states but the excuses we humans use are always and all ways a lie. A lie to ourselves first and then a story of lies we enthrall and placate our environment that operates in the “we won’t call you on your bull as long as you don’t call us on ours”.

3. We make money by making friends, and we enlarge our circle of friends by making money for them, by helping them, by being of service to them. The first law of success then is service, and this in turn is built on integrity and justice. The man who at least is not fair in his intention is simply ignorant; he has missed the fundamental law of all exchange; he is impossible; he will lose surely and certainly; he may not know it; he may think he is winning, but he is doomed to certain defeat. He cannot cheat the Infinite. The law of compensation will demand of him an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Even the jargon from a hundred years ago knew only governments make money. The rest of us have to earn it and making friends, enlarging our circle of influence being of service makes sense. [And cents]  This law of compensation, an eye for an eye, complete reciprocity does not let you be judge and jury however. The judge and jury, the Infinite has the agenda.

dragonaffairs6. A generous thought is filled with strength and vitality, a selfish thought contains the germs of dissolution; it will disintegrate and pass away. Great financiers are simply channels for the distribution of wealth; enormous amounts come and go, but it would be as dangerous to stop the outgo as the income; both ends must remain open; and so our greatest success will come as we recognize that it is just as essential to give as to get.

The sixteenth amendment, then not yet attached to the constitution, clearly, a selfish thought that contains the germ of dissolution, may prove this aspect of Haanel a prophet of doom.  Once the channels of distribution forded and dammed for the few, with crumbs spread for rest, dissolution results eventually.

8. The financier gets much because he gives much; he thinks; he is seldom a man that lets anyone else do his thinking for him; he wants to know how results are to be secured; you must show him; when you can do this he will furnish the means by which hundreds or thousands may profit, and in proportion as they are successful will he be successful. Morgan, Rockefeller, Carnegie and others did not get rich because they lost money for other people; on the contrary, it is because they made money for other people that they became the wealthiest men in the wealthiest country on the globe.

The deal they cut, at the party they held, the Jekyll Island confab in 1910 did not invite you or me or anyone we know to the party.  I am suspect of the authorized history and of Haanel’s fawning. He then recovers himself in his very next paragraph.

9. The average person is entirely innocent of any deep thinking; he accepts the OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAideas of others, and repeats them, in very much the same way as a parrot; this is readily seen when we understand the method which is used to form public opinion, and this docile attitude on the part of a large majority who seem perfectly willing to let a few persons do all their thinking for them is what enables a few men in a great many countries to usurp all the avenues of power and hold the millions in subjection. Creative thinking requires attention.

The real trouble begins next…

10. The power of attention is called concentration; this power is directed by the will; for this reason we must refuse to concentrate or think of anything except the things we desire. Many are constantly concentrating upon sorrow, loss and discord of every kind; as thought is creative it necessarily follows that this concentration inevitable leads to more loss, more sorrow and more discord. How could it be otherwise? On the other hand, when we meet with success, gain, or any other desirable condition, we naturally concentrate upon the effects of these things and thereby create more, and so it follows that much
leads to more.

whenIndoubtdontMy thinking provides all I concentrate upon and desire as long as I am not doing harm to another.  This theory sounds nice. With millions of children in our day murdered for convenience and thousands of other reasons says different. Are children their cause in this?  They attracted the cancer, the illnesses too numerous and too new to understand?  Another explanation may provide insights but Haanel’s does not.  When I grew up ‘positive thinking’, spurned incomplete as negative thinking, meant if things are bad and you think positive how does that solve, fix or make any difference!   You must ‘know’ or experience the total reality first.  So called positive thinking may work on the inside but may be a misspent waste of energy ‘out-here’.

12. “Spirit, whatever else it may or may not be, must be considered as the Essence of Consciousness, the Substance of Mind, the reality underlying Thought. And as all ideas are phases of the activity of Consciousness, Mind or Thought, it follows that in Spirit, and in it alone, is to be found the Ultimate Fact, the Real Thing, or Idea.”

Perhaps this version of ‘intelligent design’ does not pass the smell test of the current ‘true science’ hierarchy.

The lesson then rambles along a story with no connection to verifiable facts. Fiction or not, all stories have some basis in reality. With only one lesson left however, there had better be something more in the final installment or my round files name becomes Haanel.

20. Those who may shrink from this idea of employing the Infinite Power to aid one in his work in the material world, should remember that if the Infinite objected in the least to such a procedure the thing could never happen. The Infinite is quite able to take care of itself.

I hope you caught that. The only thing the Infinite manifests must be in agreement with the holediggerInfinite’s plan and agenda. If your aspiration fails this test, you will not succeed.  The question, when pursuing anything then, how long do you spend on it? How would you know if the Infinite Universe wants a giant hole for someone else to fill and build upon?

22. This week concentrate on the fact that man is not a body with a spirit, but a spirit with a body, and that it is for this reason that his desires are incapable of any permanent satisfaction in anything not spiritual. Money is therefore of no value except to bring about the conditions which we desire, and these conditions are necessarily harmonious. Harmonious conditions necessitate sufficient supply, so that if there appears to be any lack, we should realize that the idea or soul of money is service, and as this thought takes form, channels of supply will be opened, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that spiritual methods are entirely practical.

The ‘soul of money’ or service are located where? Also, again harmonious occurs with the Infinite or nothing happens, to satisfy or appear in reality. The supply of service falls upon you and me!  One small postscript, CS Lewis did not say this in any form!

Note to self: The search for the magic potion, to have something appear instantly, to manifest literally at the snap of fingers goes on!  Any time spent in the internal map of reality other than to ‘see’ what you want does not do it!  Faith or belief, two very different but related concepts, does not access the power either. Either one with zero doubt has serious possibilities however. Having zero doubt appears around the ‘law of integrity’ out-here.  Harmony with the Infinite being a given.  Matthew 21:21

Week – #22a The Silence Part III A Coin for Workability

A solution to knowing what you want, then knowing or not knowing what to do but not doing anything, anyway, may first require seeing the source of the problem.  I don’t buy the fear theory either.  I suspect the fear story only adds fuel to the fire for most people and increases the crazy. Anything that keeps the unconscious mind in charge makes the unconscious happy. Did you catch the clue?

The path keeping the unconscious mind happy may not be a workable path. Some insist we only need to retrain her. That requires hours of committed work and what if the new rules, habits and patterns, always based on some past thought process, are insufficient for your new future but especially for right now? I know you have to do something and anything is better than nothing. OH! Another way to keep the subconscious happy I suspect.

A double bind holds you and stops you. Somewhere in your subconscious memory banks, a past event, stored with a number of rules, designed by a two year old usually so ‘it’ never happens again waits to take charge of your life.  Unfortunately, anything similar will set it off and when we are in automatic mode we react to the sudden energy jolt associated with THIS CAN NOT HAPPEN TO ME AGAIN, by either flight or fight but all too often, the mixed messages we have also acquired stops us cold.  Our usual go to calm approach, get angry, watch TV, or whatever your favorite ‘cooling off’ way, never solves and honors the commitment but keeps the amygdala, monkey mind and lizard brain happy.  The more drama and trauma the more energy this event inserts into your conscious mind. An especially well worn path of unaware issues sets off a negative Amygdala Hijack.  It will run you to death until the Amygdala’s safety concerns reaches satisfaction. This automatic always and all ways approach to life keeps you clueless and in the dark, forever.

awareness1Awareness eventually solves everything. Awareness does not exist in your past or your future. Awareness NOW provides choices. It would be a great class for first graders where it would become a habit every genius would use.  When you begin to notice, to be aware of the connections and then the initial triggers and even before that the initial thought you gravitate and hold on to that begins the chain reaction, once aware you suddenly have a choice!  If you continue to allow the unconscious choir to choose, nothing happens differently and if you use your conscious mind to pick a new door, the reaction is powerful.  A feeling floods your body, danger, excitement, worry, etc and the three-headed choir is not happy. If you cannot choose something new who is stopping you?  Yes, the ‘fear’ overwhelms us time after time laying down nearly impossible to break habits that chain us to our worse nightmares. Blaming fear as the cause keeps the choir in charge. Fear tells you where to look!

When I first caught this act happening to me, the shock that I was a pawn in a ‘play’ where I was not the author or the hero changed me instantly.  My ‘choir’ lost total control 21 February 1984 and I had a portion of my life back! The battle never ends however, the mountain has no top, and the ladder goes on forever! We are always unaware of something. Using this method to climb molehills and any other kind of mountain with a top has only ultimately fed the choir. The taunts and teasing, how nothing makes a difference, a cute way of suggesting ‘they’ want back in charge has worked for them from time to time. While I have gone from over 350 pounds to under 220 pounds, they pick up lots of new ammunition every time I go below 220.  You are fine, you have lost too much already, you are too skinny now and on and on.

The choir, amygdala, lizard brain and monkey mind do some remarkable stuff however. amygdala2The last time you heard a joke that set off your laughter button and fed you happy drops all day long or at least for hours afterward was the choir at work!  Talk with anyone who has their choir chemically suppressed for medical reasons they report a loss of the emotional highs.  Their passion disabled may not be a good bargain.  Keeping the choir off line disables and short-circuits your power.  If suppression and retraining are not the path and awareness always leaves you unaware of something what can you do?

When I was perhaps six or seven, I walked in to a mass early where a hundred or more people in unison recited the Rosary. The experience was soothing and calming. That many people meditating aloud, praying together touched me profoundly. It was difficult when I wanted to do something else, actually, when my ‘choir’ wanted to do something else.  Now, I leave the house on my morning walk and I have the choir say the Rosary in three-part harmony. I can put the conscious mind to pondering something else or have it focus on now, each breath, step, tree, rock etc I set my eyes on. “I” can watch both activity sets as they occur. I check on the choir from time to time and sometimes I must go four-part harmony to stop the conscious mind ruminating about anything, especially a recent upset or concern.  This says I can put the choir to work!

delayintrafficYou have perhaps found yourself driving down a road with a task or objective in mind. The objective is in the subconscious mind primarily. When you come up behind someone going slower than you and you must ‘take back control’, you may be a little agitated. The choir’s agitation can be maddening by the way.  The choir’s agitation appears to make your speed approach a crawl somehow too. The subconscious loves to perform tasks!

When I first heard Mark Januszewski offering his Go90Grow program he was sharing how to get the elephant, one of his terms for the subconscious, to move in a prescribed direction. Engaging people’s subconscious with appropriate material raises the curiosity level of the choir getting the job done!  I am more interested in my choir doing what I want it to do than having me ‘motivate’ anyone else.   Perhaps you get both learning either one.

We all have an ability to manage the choir! We do it haphazard at times and usually without awareness. Imagine what you could do with awareness, mindfulness some call it.

Remember we live in an up and down, good and bad, two sided coin world. When I statueofresponsibilitystumbled on Victor Frankl years ago, his interest in liberty and responsibility captured my attention.

I recommend that the Statue of Liberty be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the west coast. – Viktor E. Frankl

In Scroll II Og Mandino wrote, If I have no other qualities I can succeed with love alone. Without it I will fail though I possess all the knowledge and skills of the world.

In other words, if you have love, nothing else matters. If you don’t have love, nothing else matters.

If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don’t have integrity, nothing else matters. – Harvey Mackay

Which one is it? They are two sides of the same coin.  Just as Liberty and Responsibility are two sides of another coin where we often forget the other side, we sometimes have paid too little attention to integrity. Integrity holds our source of power. So I say.

integrity00About four years ago, a friend sent me a copy of an article from a Toronto business magazine.   At the time, I read the article, commented to my friend that I would have to redesign my life to have this view of integrity fit me and kept it. The ideas excited me and I saved the article for future review. I added it to my reading during my Silence last week. The articles author interviews Michael Jensen a Harvard Professor of Economics.  He describes a ‘new’ definition of integrity he uses and teaches.

Integrity in our model is a purely positive phenomenon. It has nothing to do with good vs. bad, right vs. wrong behavior. Like the law of gravity, the law of integrity just is, and if you violate the law of integrity as we define it you get hurt just as if you try to violate the law of gravity with no safety device. …

My internal map, or wall, of reality controlled by the choir first did not appreciate his phenomenon.  ‘Keeping’ your word is a right vs. wrong standard. Honoring your word is something else entirely.

Michael Jensen said, If you’re up to anything important in life, you will not always be able to keep your word, and that’s alright, but if you are a person of integrity, you will always honour your word.

The sting, what captured my attention:

One’s word to one’s self is a critical part of integrity. By not being serious when we give our word to ourselves, we forfeit the opportunity to maintain our integrity by honouring our word to ourselves. For example, think of occasions when the issue of self-discipline comes up, and the ease with which we often dismiss it. It may be something trivial like, ‘I’m going to work out tomorrow at nine o’clock’, or something serious like, ‘I will never cheat on my wife’. By failing to honour our word to ourselves, we undermine ourselves as persons of integrity. If we aren’t serious about this aspect of integrity, it will create ‘unworkability’ in our life: we will appear to others as inconsistent, unreliable or unpredictable. You simply cannot be a whole and complete person if you don’t honour your word to yourself. Unfortunately, people almost universally ascribe the mess in their lives resulting from out-of-integrity behaviour to some justification or rationalization.  – Michael Jensen.

Everyone may have some ‘unworkability’ in his or her life. What do you call the JTL003reality2inconsistent, unpredictable and unreliable behavior you are with yourself?  Perhaps you blame it on someone else or the circumstances.  My gap between the occurring and the possible … massive unworkability and I have only scratched the surface in my word with myself so far. This and the six aspects of integrity require a new and improved design of my internal map of reality. My great grandparents, grandparents and parents coached, coddled and encouraged me to walk and be potty trained by nine months.  Talking happened anyway. (There are movies!) My first trauma was 15 months away yet and this phenomenon excites me as much as learning to walk did, maybe more.

Please, read the article, Integrity: Without It Nothing Works and save it for later or continued study.

The choir has a new challenge to accomplish – my integrity.  “Nothing else matters!” Everyone willing to begin the climb is welcome on the journey!  Can you smell breakthrough? The coin of the realm, heads or tails, love and integrity, one grows the other!
